Fisheries Regulations Reviewed

It is proposed that a large proportion of the existing regulations will be retained in the new Fisheries Regulations 2008, but a series of additional changes are proposed.

A review that is being headed up by Fisheries Victoria is drafting nhe new regulations to improve their clarity and effectiveness.

Regulatory Impact Statement

Notice is given in accordance with section 11 of the Subordinate Legislation Act 1994, that a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) has been prepared in relation to the Fisheries Regulations 2008.

The RIS describes and justifies the need for the fisheries regulations and the proposed changes from the Fisheries Regulations 1998. The new regulations affect, in particular, recreational fishers, commercial fishers, and aquaculturalists.

Key changes from the existing fisheries regulations include:

• New catch and size limits for some fish species.
• The introduction of mandatory daily catch and effort recording for all commercial fishery access licences.
• Additional reporting requirements for commercial eel fishers.
• Recording of source of stock by aquaculture operators.
