Promoting Sustainable Farmed Salmon from the East Coast
The North Atlantic Aquaculture Council (NAAC) today announced the launch of a new guide to help consumers make informed choices about farmed salmon from the East Coast. The guide, called "East Coast Atlantic Salmon Fresh Facts", sets the record straight on DHA Omega-3 fatty acids, food safety and environmentally sustainable farming practices in one concise brochure.
"The science is clear - East Coast Atlantic salmon is an important food for good health, and a smart, sustainable choice," says Dr. Jamey Smith, executive director of the New Brunswick Salmon Growers' Association (NBSGA) and member of the NAAC. "Most importantly, we want to empower consumers to make the right choice for themselves and the environment."
Available on-line at www.AllAboutSalmon.com, the guide presents the facts in an easy-to-read and understand format. Substantial research from health organizations, including the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, U.S. FDA, and Center for Science in the Public Interest, was used in the development of the "Fresh Facts" guide.
"East Coast salmon farmers adhere to rigorous, science-based environmental performance standards set by government regulators," adds Dr. Smith. "Consumers can have confidence in their choice to include delicious, fresh Atlantic salmon on their weekly menu."
