Print This Page Oyster Beds Halt Development
US - Plans for a $500 million waterfront development of luxury apartments and a marina have been put on hold because of oyster beds.
Westport Property Management plans to redevlop the former Remington Shaver property in Bridgeport Connecticut.
However, plans for the marina have come to a halt because of a threat to the local oyster beds.
State officials are refusing to issue a permit for the marina and teh developers say that without that feature, which also includes a boardwalk and restaurant, 1,200 condominiums also planned for the site will not be built.
According to the Connecticut Post, Mayor Bill Finch is now pushing the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Agriculture to be more flexible regarding underwater areas set aside years ago for oyster beds.
