Print This Page Fisheries Commission to Amend Herring Policy
US - The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC)is expected to bring in amendments to the river herring fishing regulations in Virginia in a bid to halt the decline in numbers.According to reports in the News Leader, the ASMFC has called on the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) to regulate river herring in 2009.
The move was based upon what the ASMFC sees as a decline in the number of river herring being harvested by mostly commercial anglers.
The amendments are expected to be brought in next month and will be the subject of a public hearing.
However, the News Leader says that the move is also expected to upset the fishing industry and community in Virginia.
