Raising Farmed Fish Standards in Store

US - More and more stores in the USA are setting down standards for farmed fish and shrimp to ensure they are delivering environmentally friendly products.

The organic food store Whole Foods is to set out comprehensive guidelines for aquaculture products this week, according to a report in the Washington Post.

And Wal Mart has already established standards for farmed shrimp and certified its factories with the Aquaculture Certification Council.

The Post report adds that the Wegmans store has worked with the Environmental Defense Fund to build a policy for farmed shrimp, banning the use of antibiotics and ensuring the sensitive habitats are not damages and reducing the use of wild fish to feed shrimp.

"There are actually a lot of farmers right now who are trying to do the right thing," Jill Schwartz, a spokeswoman for the World Wildlife Fund, which has advised Whole Foods on its standards, told the Washington Post.

"Things are moving in the right direction."
