Print This Page Aussie Aquaculture Doubling by 2015
AUSTRALIA - Growing demand had set Australian aquaculture on a growing trend which seems set to double production by the year 2015.The chairman of the peak body representing the aquaculture industry says 60,000 tonnes of fish, shellfish and crustaceans are produced in Australia each year, reports ABC news.
According to the agency, Craig Foster says it is hoped this can be increased to 100,000 tonnes annually.
He says this will be done through expansion of salmon operations in Tasmania, kingfish in South Australia and prawns in Queensland.
"The current production of farm prawns is about 3,200 tonnes ... we believe that that will extend to about 7,000 tonnes," he told ABC.
