Recreational Scallop Season Closes

The Minister for Primary Industries and Water, David Llewellyn, said there were more than 6,200 licence holders in the 2008 recreational scallop season, with most fishing in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel.

"The 2008 season was the 4th season since the recreational fishery was re-opened in 2005 following the rebuilding of stocks," Mr Llewellyn said.

"Fishers are reporting good catches, with many catching their daily bag limit of 50 scallops without difficulty, but research has shown that fishing is having an impact on stock levels.

"The Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute will be conducting a post-season survey of scallop stocks in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel which will be used to assess if management changes are necessary to secure future sustainability," he said.

Mr Llewellyn reminded fishers that the Marine Police would be on the lookout for those who are taking scallops out of season.

"Members of the public can help protect our fisheries by reporting any potential illegal fishing activities to Fishwatch on 0427 655 557," he said.
