SFF Renews Call for Fuel Crisis Aid

SCOTLAND - On the eve of a meeting of the Fuel Task Force in Aberdeen, the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation renewed its call for urgent practical help from the Scottish Government to alleviate the impact of sky-high fuel prices.

The Fuel Task Force was established in June to advise on and develop fuel efficiency measures for the Scottish fleet. Today's meeting (8 August) at the SFF Aberdeen headquarters will examine the formation of a plan for the fleet to adapt to permanently high fuel prices.

Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the SFF, said: "The easing of fuel prices from their extreme peak over the last few days is welcome - but the level remains double that of January this year and by all estimates will stay at a greatly higher level than before.

"This means we need to get on with the job of planning for maximum fuel efficiency, maximum effectiveness of the fleet at sea and best value for this wonderful product that we harvest.

"We hope the fuel task force will be able to take forward these aims so that we can get on with our everyday work on ensuring stock sustainability. We look to fisheries minister Richard Lochhead to provide the practical wherewithal to turn the vision of a commercially sustainable industry into reality."
