New Fisheries Body Brings New Hope to Ghana
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Fisheries, Mrs. Gladys Asmah, said poor Landing Sites, post harvest losses, poor equipment base, low investment in the fishing industry, extreme poverty in fishing communities and lack of refrigeration facilities are factors militating against effective functioning of the Industry, reports the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.
According to her, the Ministry with support from the Food and Agricultural Organisation, FAO, hired consultants to put together a Draft Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy document to serve as a guide towards re-engineering the sector.
Mrs. Asmah announced that her ministry is soliciting a loan of US$128m to modernize the fishing industry. She revealed that a total of 13,890 fish ponds have been contracted to embark on aquaculture.
