Kenya Govt Embraces Aquaculture
According to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, speaking while touring aqua culture projects in Nyakach constituency fisheries minister Paul Otuoma said increased population of fishermen and the global climatic changes posed serious threats to the availability of fish in the lake.
He thus urged farmers residing in the lake basin region to embrace aqua culture to ease mounting pressure on the fish reservoirs in Lake Victoria, reports the news agency.
Otuoma said the ministry the fisheries policy would ensure Kenyans involved in the fish industry fully benefited.
Otuoma was accompanied by assistant minister Abu Chiaba and area MP Ochieng Daima.
He warned that due to the ever increasing demand for fish, the availability of the commodity which is a source of food and livelihood for a huge number of Lake Basin residents will become a thing of the past unless drastic measures are taken to find an alternative to supplement the demand.
