Aquaculture Specialists Gather at Hipon Summit

PHILIPPINES - Shrimp culture and its varied prospects was the focus of a conference for the promotion of the Penaues Vannamei specie attended by aquaculture specialists, growers and buyers from all over the Philippines Thursday.

Dubbed as Hipon Summit 2008, the conference was held at the Leisure Coast Resort in this coastal city seeking means to enhance the government and industry partnership for the promotion of the specie of shrimp.

The two-day event started with the opening of the exhibit area where aquamarine products were displayed for viewing. City Administrator Alvin Fernandez, representing Mayor Alipio Fernandez, Jr, led the ribbon-cutting with National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) Interim Executive Director Westly Rosario and Samahan at Ugnayang sa Alagang Hipon, Inc,(SUAHI) President Teofilo Rivera

The participants who came from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao were updated on the local and global status of the p. vannamei as well as the China experiences on the culture of the specie.

Rosario laid down the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and NFRDI initiatives on the p. vannamei culture.

"Strategic thinking and careful planning for the promotion of the p. vannamei culture must be delivered. We must all look into the balance where all stockholders will be happy." Rosario said.

Officers of the Philippine Aquaculture Society (PAS) led by its president Dr. Joebert Toledo were inducted by City Administrator Fernandez.

A dialogue on the research, development and extension needs for the development of p. vannamei industry that focuses on hatchery, culture, postharvest and market, trade and promotion capped the first day of the summit.
