Processor’s SALSA Success with Seafish
SCOTLAND, UK - A whitefish primary processor based in Aberdeen, has become the first seafood processor to be awarded with Safe and Local Supplier Approval (SALSA) certification with support from Seafish.SALSA is designed to offer local food manufacturers a consistent standard that is accepted by the UK food buying community and which delivers tangible food safety improvements for both suppliers and buyers. It is hoped the scheme will build buyers’ confidence and create potential for greater commercial benefit to businesses.

Andrew Charles, Managing Director of J Charles, who recieved the award said: “SALSA offers an extremely powerful new tool for smaller seafood processing businesses. The scheme focuses on delivering quality goods which offers robust traceability assurance for customers without too much technical jargon.”
SALSA is an independently audited approval scheme which covers all aspects of production control, including HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point), management systems, document control and premises requirements.
Businesses wishing to gain either SALSA or certification to the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standards either for Food Safety or Storage and Distribution can apply for support from Seafish towards the cost of mentoring and training. This new strategy has replaced the Seafish Quality Processor and Quality Wholesaler Awards.
David Brackston, BRC Senior Technical Services Manager, said: “This support from Seafish creates a great incentive to seafood businesses wanting to gain BRC certification.”
