Caviar Company Fishes for Profits

CANADA - Plans by Acadian Sturgeon and Caviar Inc. to boost exports to Asia this summer have been delayed as the Carters Point firm works to meet country-specific industry standards and develop trade relations abroad.

But, according to the New Brunswick Business Journal, the company, which sells both live sturgeon and caviar, remains well-situated to grab a share of the growing aquaculture industry.

The company's president said that shipments to Taiwan were halted temporarily this summer as the company adjusted to the country's industry regulations. Exports to South Korea were also less than expected, with levels still only at the "testing stage,".

But, Ceapa added, the company is making profit and gradually accumulating the cash flow necessary for the construction of a $4-million sturgeon farm that would increase its caviar production capacity.

Sturgeon caviar is a delicacy around the globe and wild stocks, particularly in the Caspian Sea, have dropped by as much as 90 per cent in the past 20 years, reports the journal.
