Kimberley Town Anticipates Aquaculture Wave

AUSTRALIA - While it's still suffering from the collapse of the local abattoir in the 1980s, there's renewed hope in the Kimberley town of Wyndham, with an anticipated aquaculture boom.

Construction is beginning on a pilot aquaculture program, which will farm mud crabs, prawns, barramundi and other fish species, reports ABC Rural.

The news agency says that small trials are being conducted and financed by a group of locals and outside investors, who say production will begin as early as next year.

The proposal for a large scale prawn farm has long been in the pipeline for Wyndham, but has never got off the ground due to a number of environmental and heritage issues.
