Iceland's New Responsible Label

The logo was presented at the Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition last weekend and will be ready later this month. All fish processing companies which products fulfill the requirements described above, can have the logo printed on their products, Morgunbladid reports.

“It is key for Icelanders that the fish stocks are harnessed in a responsible and sustainable way,” reads a statement from the Fisheries Association of Iceland.

In the past few years demands on sustainable harnessing of renewable resources, including fish stocks, have increased world-wide. That also applies to Iceland’s largest markets for fish export, for example Switzerland, where supermarkets have stopped selling Icelandic cod due to lack of a guarantee of sustainability.

A certification company will be involved in the project, which is organized by the Fisheries Association, and follow guidelines set by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
