A Halloween Message: Eat More Fish!
According to consumer research(, it is still surprising that even though Irish people are eating more fish, it is generally only once a week and the majority eat seafood in restaurants instead of also preparing it at home.
The same research also confirmed that more than half of Irish people surveyed (52%) are aware that oil rich fish is a great source of Omega-3 but many are not aware that oil rich fish and fish in general also contain a wide range of vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for the entire family.
Fish has many benefits to offer children but many kids miss out – Irish children on average eat less than ½ a portion of fish a week(*2) - well below the recommended 2 portions. Fish has huge benefits for kids - fish is a rich source of protein which is essential for all those rapidly growing bones and muscles.
Fish is easy to digest and is gentle on little stomachs. All kinds of fish are rich in minerals like zinc, selenium and iodine that healthy bones, muscles and immune systems need. The Omega 3 fats found in oil rich fish such as trout and mackerel are essential for healthy brain development. So why do so many kids miss out? If children were not offered much fish when they were starting solid food, it can be difficult to get them to eat it later on and if parents don’t eat fish – their children may never get to try it!
