Aussie Salmon Farmers Retaliate to UN Letter

AUSTRALIA - Australian salmon producers are defending themselves against the current criticism of farmers in the Northern Hemisphere.

Scientists, environmentalists, traditional owners and tourist operators are submitting a declaration to the United Nations complaining that industrial net salmon farming is polluting and killing wild fish stocks, reported ABC Rural this week.

According to the news agency, Simon Bennison, from the National Aquaculture Council, says the regulations pertaining to Australia's small salmon farming sector are oceans apart from what's allowed overseas.

"And that has specific criteria that limits the industry being able to overload in certain areas. It's very tightly regulated. It's very compliant," he says.
