Mindano: an Ideal Spot for Aquaculture

PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said the natural features in Mindanao are perfect for aquaculture because most of the areas are free from natural calamities like typhoon that contribute to the destruction of the natural habitat of marine resources.

BFAR director Malcolm Sarmiento in his recent visit here said the government wants to preserve marine resources to help address climate change and Mindanao contributes 42 per cent of the total fish production of the Philippines, reports Balita-dot-ph.

“Mindanao is really a perfect area for aquaculture. The BFAR shifted in its direction of helping the fishermen from harvesting to farming that is why, there is massive campaign for aquaculture,” he told the news agency.

Sarmiento said with the breakthrough of new species, they wanted to widen the base of aquaculture.

He said among the new species are the Banami (super shrimp) that grows twice as Tiger Prawn the latter which is only half the size of the super shrimp. The Black Tiger is also a new specie and good for aquaculture production.

Sarmiento said the newest addition that is propagated in the Philippines is the pangasius catfish, which the government is supporting its propagation.
