CHILE - Chile called on the European Union to defend a decision under global trade rules to impose minimum import prices on imports of farmed salmon, contesting protection for producers in the U.K. and Ireland. Norway may also protest. The restrictions "seriously affect exports to the European market," and the EU hasn't met the World Trade Organization criterion that "serious harm" has been caused to its domestic industry, the Chilean government said in a letter to the EU seen by Bloomberg News. The request for consultations at the Geneva- based WTO is the first step in a formal trade dispute.
The EU contends that Norway, which supplies four-fifths of the bloc's farmed salmon imports, worth 830 million euros ($1.06 billion) in 2003, has been exporting at below-market price. Chile, which accounts for about 6 percent of the EU's imports of farmed salmon, is also affected by the measures.
