Changing With the Climate: a Helping Hand
The project is being funded by Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperations (NORAD)and the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia Pacific (NACA).
The project will be the first of the new work program, 'Emerging issues in aquaculture" of NACA, and the first ever to be funded by NORAD, writes Simon Wilkinson for NACA.
This three year project is due to commence in 2009 will include studies on specific aquatic farming systems in India (shrimp), Indonesia (seaweed), Nepal (mountain aquaculture), Thailand (river cage farming) and Vietnam (tra catfish), and will address vulnerability in each farming system and suitable adaptive measures and capabilities to adapt.
The project will involve, apart from the national counterparts, Akvaplan-niva ÅS, Tromso, Norway, Bioforsk - the Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research, Ås, Norway, the Department of Coastal Development Centre and Aquaculture Business Research Centre of Fisheries, and Environmental Science Kasetsart University, Thailand.
Negotiations on the possibilities of a secondment from Fisheries Victoria, Department of Primary Industries, Australia, to manage the project is under way and will further strengthen the collaborative effort.
