Haryana Hooked on Fish Production
The state government's efforts to promote fishery as a profitble subsidiary profession in rural areas have shown positive results with the state's fish production leapfrogging from 48,200 tonne in 2005 to 54,428 tonnes, writes Ramesh Vinayak for India Today. According to India Today, the same would touch a record figure of 77,755 tonne by the end of current financial years, according to a spokesman of the fisheries department.
Similarly, the water area under fish culture had also been increased from 10,532 hectares to 12,800 hectares and it was envisaged to increase to 15,250 hectares by the end of this financial year, said the spokesman, adding that per hectare fish production would also be increased from 5048 kilogram to 5200 kilogram , and efforts would be made for greater people participation in the fish culture and generation of employment opportunities for 20,000 families as full time and 60,000 as part time avocation.
Haryana is ranked second in the country in terms of per hectare fish production.
