Kenyan Fish Price Hike: Victoria Runs Low
The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute deputy director Dr Richard Abila, told the media that the current shortage of other food items – vegetables - has led to increased reliance on fish for food. “The demand has necessitated the rise in price,” he said.
According to AfricaNews, Tilapia and Nile perch were now becoming scarce as a result of intensified fishing in the lake. Use of illegal fishing nets has also led to the dwindling stocks, according to fisheries experts. Fried fish that previously cost Sh100 is now going for Sh150 on markets in Migori, Isebania, Awendo, Ranen and Rongo towns.
Due to the increase in the price of fish, consumers are now turning to omena as it is relatively cheaper. A tin of omena costs about Sh50.
