Oban Hosts UK's First Aquaculture Safety Event

UK - Scottish fish farmers are to gather in Oban to attend the UK's first aquaculture and maritime safety awareness event.

Through practical demonstrations it will remind fish farmers of good practice and provide an opportunity for the industry to get together and share their experiences.

According to FishUpdate, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Northern Lighthouse Board, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and Fort William Underwater Centre have joined together through the Scottish Aquaculture Industry Forum to provide this unique opportunity for those working in the aquaculture industry to identify common workplace hazards and precautions.

Qualified instructors and experienced personnel from a range of organisations will present practical demonstrations on how to avoid the most common causes of accidents and ill health arising in aquaculture and other marine activities, reports FishUpdate. These include: boat stability and cranes; safe entry Into confined spaces; fork lift truck/ transport issues; lifejacket; life rafts and flare; and cold shock.

HSE inspector Ann Poyner said: 'Aquaculture is an important industry in Scotland and one that we can be very proud of; however we must not forget that the marine environment is dangerous and unforgiving. Since 2000 HSE has investigated four cases of drowning in the fish farming sector.
