An End to Cod Farming in Norwegian Fjord

It was the cod farm's close proximity to the Verdal River that was the major reason why there has been an important shift in opinion from the Directorate, reported Fish And Fly earlier today.

Heavy and prolonged pressure from the County Fisheries Manager, Anton Rikstad – the chairman of Verdal River Association, John Oldren and the organisation “Elvene rundt Trondheimfjorden” (Rivers around Trondheim-fjord) swayed the authorities to ban any further cod-farming in this fjord system. According to Fish and Fly, the fjord in question is regarded by many as the most important in the world for Atlantic salmon.

County fisheries manager, Anton Rikstad stated that – “We have presented a very strong case about the consequences for the wild salmon in the area. It is too important a resource to use for experiments and we have to follow the principle of ‘prevention rather than cure’.”
