Canadian MP to Introduce Fish Farm Labels
The MP for Vancouver Kingsway has prepared a private member’s bill that would make it mandatory to label seafood as wild or farm-raised in order to import or package the products, reports Straight.com.
According to the news organisation, Davies told the Straight that he drew up the Fish Labelling Act because more and more Canadians are becoming concerned about the environmental and health impacts of food.
“This is a very simple bill,” Davies told Straight.com. “But it’s meaningful in people’s lives. People have a right to know and make informed choices as to whether or not they’re purchasing wild or farmed salmon.”
On February 9, the B.C. Supreme Court ruled that the provincial government’s regulation of fish farms is unconstitutional and that the federal government is responsible for regulating the operations. Justice Chris Hinkson gave the federal government 12 months to come up with fish-farm legislation of its own.
Asked what he thinks the federal government should do with the aquaculture operations, Davies wouldn’t say.
