Import Ban Lifted on Malaysian Seafood
The FVO decided to lift the ban on frozen seafood products from five Malaysian companies and four farms after its visit which ended March 12, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.
“I am happy because the FVO has cleared all doubt and has readmitted Malaysia into the EU import list,” he said.
“Now it is a matter of time to process the approval for the companies to begin exporting again to the EU,” he added.
According to TheStar, Liow said the approval process normally takes about six weeks, but his ministry would expedite the process.
It was learnt that the nine companies above accounted for about RM100mil in export earnings annually to the EU, says TheStar. The whole frozen seafood industry to the EU, comprising 14-15 exporters, is believed to be worth about RM600mil annually.
