Mussel Project Repeats in Goa
One of the highly successful projects of the CMFRI has been the technology innovation research project in mussel farming that benefited women selfhelp groups (SHG) in the northern coastal districts of Kerala including Kasargod, Kozhikode and Malappuram, reports ExpressBuzz. Now it will be tried in the Goan waters.
“We developed the rope technique suitable for mussel farming in the Kasargod area which was ideal for cultivation. And there were takers for it,” K Sunil Mohammed, head, Molluscan Fisheries Division, CMFRI Kochi, told the news organisation. “Almost 87 per cent of the SHG farms are owned by women.” The success of the project has led to the visit of a team of Goan farmers to study the technique and use it for the Goan fisherfolk. “Goa has a very good market for mussels because of its tourism industry.
The locals also consume them in large numbers, unlike in Kerala where mussels have a market only in the northern districts,” he says.
