Norwegian Seafood Exports up 15 Per Cent

NORWAY - The export value of Norwegian seafood was NOK 10.7 billion (EUR 1.3 billion) in the first quarter of 2009. This represents an increase of NOK 1.4 million (EUR 159,000) or 15 per cent, when compared to the same period last year, a Norwegian industry group has found.

Last month alone, exports generated NOK 3.7 billion (EUR 420 million), an increase of NOK 729 million (EUR 82 million), reveal figures released by the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC).

Reporting on the news, Michael Loubet of FIS says that different parts of the Norwegian seafood business have experienced varying results so far this year.

Good demand for salmon and Norwegian fjord trout, herring and mackerel, in many central markets has contributed to new export records for these species. However, at the opposite end of the scale, the cod sector is struggling with a significant reduction particularly in salt fish exports to Portugal.
