Shetland Farmers Working Together

Five aquaculture firms growing salmon and sea trout yesterday (Monday) announced they had signed a voluntary agreement to synchronise their stocking, one year ahead of schedule.

The agreement will be activated next year when salmon multinationals Hjaltland Seafarms and Scottish Sea Farms; local firm Skelda Salmon; sea trout producers QA Fish and the scientific Shetland Fisheries Centre restock their cages off south west Shetland next spring.

The move follows major problems with the sea lice parasite on some salmon farms, which led government fisheries inspectors to discover the notifiable disease Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA) on three fish farms off Scalloway between January and March this year.
