THAILAND - Impacts of the devastating tidal waves on local shrimp production are likely to be felt in full in the middle of this year, with losses of at least 20 billion baht estimated for Thai shrimp exports in 2005.According to Panisuan Jamnarnwej, the president of the Thai Frozen Foods Association, the country is expected to lose nearly one-third of its shrimp exports, or about 20 billion baht in export value, as a result of the tsunami that swept through six southern provinces on Dec 26.
Shrimp exports fetched the country about 75 billion baht in 2004. The tsunami swept away more than 200 shrimp hatchery farms, with total damage of at least two billion baht, thus reducing the supply of raw materials including shrimp fry. The shortage of shrimp fry is estimated to cut shrimp production by 20-30% this year.
