Print This Page Investing in Aquaculture: NZ$2.8m to Locate Potential
NORTHLAND, NEW ZEALAND - Henry Island near Whangaruru Harbour and Bream Bay, and other Northland sites, could be investigated for their marine farming potential by the government.
According to a report by the Whangarei Leader, the government has decided to support the aquaculture industry by investing $2.8 million into research in Northland.
Whangarei MP and fisheries minister Phil Heatley says aquaculture is a significant opportunity for New Zealand to get out of the recession and create jobs, says the news organisation.
The two-year research programme, led by the Ministry for the Environment, will look at potential aquaculture marine areas including some already identified by the Northland Regional Council.
