A Modern Message for Indian Aquaculture

INDIA - A seminar on profitable fish farming was recently held in Tamil Nadu.

About 120 fish farmers from Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts participated in the seminar which was jointly organised by Americal Soyabean Association Marketing (ASA-IM), Sustainable Research Foundation, Maanal Fish Farm and Everest Aqua Tech at Orathanadu, reported TheHindu.

According to the news organisation, K. Venkatasamy, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Tiruvarur stressed the need to adopt modern feed based scientific fish farming techniques to increase the productivity of the farms.

N. Neethiselvan, Associate Professor of Tamil Nadu Veterinary University extension centre said that farmers should adopt optimal stocking densities based on the infrastructure facilities available with them on the farm.

G. Ramesh, Technical Manager, Aquaculture, ASA-IM said that the cost of feed contributed to around 60 per cent of the total production cost of fish farming and hence proper feed management is vital to the profitability. The traditional manure and mash based fish farming leads to a huge wastage of ingredients and increases the organic load in the pond water and soil. The use of modern extruded floating fish feeds aid in easy feeding and help in monitoring the feeding behaviour of fishes, reduce feed wastage, efficiently recycle the pond water, improve production from the same unit area, reduce disease risk and give higher economic return to the fish farmers.
