Seafish Welcomes Green Paper Reform

Sustainability Politics +2 more

UK - Seafish, the authority on seafood, welcomes the Commissions green paper on reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) which was released today.

John Rutherford, Chief Executive at Seafish, said: "We are glad the Commission recognises the fundamental issues that need to be tackled, in particular the urgent need for a solution to discards and the need for a level playing field across all member states.

“We welcome the proposal for the opportunity it offers fishermen to become involved in the responsible management of fish stocks, which is something we have been pushing for some time. We believe this proposal acknowledges the improved record of fishermen in terms of environmental responsibility in recent years. Seafish would urge the Commission to work with fishermen and encourage greater regional management and a greater role for the seafood industry.

“The drive for compliance and enforcement suggested in this paper is fundamental to long-term success for the CFP as is an understanding that climate change will have an ongoing impact on these proposals,” continued Rutherford.
