Scottish Marine Bill is Launched - Now for Feedback

SCOTLAND, UK - Views are being sought on proposals to change the way competing demands on Scotland’s coastline and coastal waters are managed.

The Rural Affairs and Environment Committee is seeking opinions from individuals and organisations with an involvement or interest in the Marine (Scotland) Bill which was introduced to the Scottish Parliament this week.

The Bill sets out plans to manage Scotland’s coastline and coastal waters to provide economic benefits while at the same time safeguarding the marine environment for future generations.

The Bill includes proposals for:

  • a statutory marine planning system for Scotland with national and regional structures
  • reductions in regulatory ‘burdens’ for marine licensing and marine consents
  • provisions to establish Marine Protected Areas and marine Conservation Orders
  • a new licensing system to manage seals in Scottish waters.

Committee Convener Maureen Watt said: “The management of Scotland’s coastline and coastal waters is a very important issue. The marine environment is a hugely rich and diverse resource and appropriate management is required to ensure that it can provide benefits for Scotland’s economy while at the same time being protected and enhanced for future generations to enjoy.

"The committee is keen to hear from anybody with an interest or involvement in Scotland’s marine environment so that any issues or concerns can be raised with the Scottish Government and measures taken to ensure the Marine (Scotland) Bill achieves all its aspirations.”
