Whole Foods to Source all Catfish from One Place

US - Carolina Classics Catfish, recently became Whole Foods Market's exclusive source for farm-raised channel catfish.

"Whole Foods Market's farmed catfish are fed at the pond's surface, which makes for a clean-tasting, mild fish. There is not a trace of that muddy flavor you might remember from the catfish you caught in the river as a kid," said Kevin McDade, Whole Foods Market's Mid-Atlantic seafood coordinator.

The North Carolina-based farm is required to meet Whole Foods Market's strict farmed seafood standards. This means that the catfish must be free of antibiotics, synthetic algicides, and land-animal byproducts in feed. The hatchery, ponds, feed mill and processing plant supplying catfish to Whole Foods Market are all managed by the same farmer, which they say offers complete control over the production process and traceability "from pond to plate."
