Canada Cuts Funds from Fisheries Research Centre
According to a report from the TelegraphJournal, regional director of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency told the Commons fisheries committee on Tuesday that funding for the Canadian Centre of Fisheries Innovation is coming to an end.
After 20 years and about $26-million, ACOA sees no reason to extend the innovation centre's funding because ACOA believes the centre has served its purpose, said Richard Comerford, a Newfoundland and Labrador regional director for ACOA.
The centre of fisheries innovation is based in St. John's.
"We came to the conclusion after 20 years that the objective had pretty much been met," Comerford is reported to have said by the TelegraphJournal after the meeting.
Through the first two five-year terms, ACOA issued $15 million in funding and he said the programme was kept going for as long as it could be extended.
