Vietnamese Fish Firms Apply Foreign Traceability Systems

VIET NAM - The Binh An catfish and Caminex shrimp export companies are the first Vietnamse seafood firms to apply a traceability system to oversee food safety.

The Mekong Delta-based companies, located in Can Tho and Ca Mau provinces, respectively, will operate the system for the next three months.

The traceability system, which will use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to track seafood exports, will help ensure export purity and freshness.

The system is part of a pilot project carried out by IBM and FXA, a global provider of enterprise traceability solutions, in co-operation with the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) and the Vietnamese State Agency for Technological Innovation (SATI).

If the project is successful, it is expected to hasten the adoption of traceability solutions in the food export industry in Viet Nam.

A seminar on systems using IT and RFID technology was held in Can Tho City last Tuesday.

"Many countries around the world have set strict regulations and industry requirements to monitor food transportation and the origin of the food," said Dr. Chu Ngoc Anh, director of SATI.

"The application of advanced technology such as RFID and traceability solutions can help Vietnamese seafood producers meet international food standards and increasingly strict technical requirements," said Nguyen Hoai Nam, VASEP’s deputy general secretary.

The traceability technology will also be tested at selected Vietnamese farms which export seafood to retailers in Japan, the US and Europe.
