Ireland Sued Over Alleged Aquaculture Failures

According to NewEurope, EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas, in a reply to a letter from Higgins, said: “The Irish authorities have provided the Commission with information in relation to proposed new legislative measures necessary to address the issues in question.

"In light of Ireland’s failure to make sufficient progress on this matter, the Commission is taking further legal action.” Higgins said, “It is unbelievable that the Government has been, yet again, brought to the European Court of Justice over its failure to protect the environment.” He said he took action after fishing groups told irreversible damage was being done due to haphazard rules and regulations for aquaculture.
