Editorial: Getting to Know the Bivalves Before it is too Late
It was a bad week for oysters as the first ever comprehensive report of its kind claims that 85 per cent of oyster reefs have been lost worlwide. The report, released by the Nature Conservancy, outlines the fundamental importance of these water filterering bivalves and highlights a complete lack of awareness of the problem.
It was only a couple of weeks ago when a report from the New Zealand Royal Society said that all shellfish were under great threat from the growing levels of ocean acidification caused by the absorption of carbon dioxide from the air. The report argued that the only prevention strategy was to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide.
However, later this week another report was released which showed that we can begin to understand the health of our bivalve friends through the use of genomics. “A major problem with bivalve populations is determining whether they’re healthy, sick or in-between,” said Dr. Helen Gurney-Smith. According to her, genomic science can provide the neccessary to keep them happy as a clam.

Tilapia: All that We Ask For
Tilapia has become synonymous with good quality, cheap and sustainable seafood. It is no surprise then that its global demand rises each year, but can tilapia keep up with the pace as this demand gets evermore specific, asks Adam Anson, reporting for TheFishSite.
