Editorial: Discrepancies and Conflicts in the Media
Yesterday, World Oceans Day was officially recognised by the United Nations for the first time in its history. Canadian Minister of Fisheries and Oceans said it was a time to "raise awareness about the health of our oceans and acknowledge the role that we all play in conserving and protecting them." Greenpeace Canada undermined this sentiment by launching a video on seafood destruction, highlighting the fault of Canadian retailers.
It was a week of claims and counterclaims. Another documentary - End of the Line - caused heated debate having claimed that we might see the end of most seafood by 2048 if current practices continue. The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation said that the film portrayed an excessively gloomy and over-simplistic picture of global fish stocks.
Meanwhile, Kona Yellowtail came under attack from native Hawaiian leaders who said that it should be removed from the 'good alternative' list compiled by Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch card. Company Co-founder and President, Neil Anthony Sims hit back. "These lobbyist groups want to subvert all evidence of sustainable solutions." He went on to say that Kona Yellowtail is an important step in addressing the crisis in our oceans. He was just in time for World Oceans Day.
