Editorial: Boost for Scottish Salmon Farming Industry
The Scottish salmon farming industry received a welcome boost this week with a grant of £100,000 from the Shetland Island Council and funds of more than £1 million from European fisheries funds to help those companies that have been affected by the outbreak of Infectious Salmon Anaemia.
Meanwhile, attention has also turned towards the growth in cod farming.
In Maine, new cod farming ventures are proving to be developing at a pace and in Australia, scientists have developed means of manipulating the environment to have cod spawning all year to ensure continuous supplies.
However, the World Wildlife Fund has also raised concerns in Norway about the rate of growth of the industry and it has called for environmental impact studies to be carried out.
