Editorial: US Fear Asian Tilapia Imports

It appears that tensions are growing between the US catfish industry and the tilapia industry in South East Asia.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) voiced its strong opposition against the US International Trade Commission (ITC)’s decision to continue imposing anti-dumping duties on imports of Vietnamese tra and basa catfish for another five-years.

The US government has imposed a tariff of 66.34 per cent on imports since 2002.

However, the US catfish industry has also expressed concern about the amount of imports coming from China.

The fears are that more than 60 per cent of the tilapia imports to the US comes from China, but the product does not come under new stricter federal inspection regulations that cover domestic catfish.
