Editorial: Are Fish Stocks Finally Beginning to Recover?
Optimism for the future of fisheries was at a high unseen for many years this week with the release of a groundbreaking assessment of the status of marine fisheries and ecosystems. The two-year assessment, released by an international team of 19 co-authors concluded that management steps taken to curb overfishing are beginning to succeed in five of the 10 large marine ecosystems examined.
Unfortunately, the good news could not be shared in all corners of the globe. US Representative Jim McDermott, called for a scientific analysis of the federal government’s Northwest salmon recovery effort, saying that most wild stocks remain at dangerously low levels despite the $8 billion spent on their recovery.
Meanwhile in France, a mystery plague that has killed millions of oysters is plunging the industry into crisis for a second year running.
This year's crisis differs from the previous plague as it has come in two waves. Currently, the overall damage is roughly the same as it was last year, but producers are saying that another hit would be a complete catastrophe for the industry.
