Editorial - Agreement Reached over Principles of New EU Fisheries Policy
Danish Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Eva Kjer Hansen, and her British, Scottish and German colleagues agreed in Aalborg last week the new principles that they believe should form the foundation for Europe's Common Fisheries Policy when it is revised in 2012.
"We four ministers have now agreed to ask the European Commission and the Council of Ministers to develop the fisheries policy on the basis of the new principles that I proposed to the Council of Ministers last autumn," said Ms Hansen.
There is backing for the proposal from environment campaigners WWF International, biologists and many fishermen, and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea says that catch quotas are a considerable advance on present management methods.
Mexican national fisheries production has registered an average annual growth of 2.5 per cent over the past nine years. Estimates for capture and culture for this year are 1.758 million tonnes live weight. Aquaculture accounts for an increasing share of overall production. However, the shrimp industry is at a critical point because of a lack of a market.
And finally, Ireland has reported high mortalities in farmed Pacific oysters from a suspected variant Ostreid herpes virus 1 (OsHV1).
