Editorial - Opportunities and Threats Uncovered in the Genes

At a meeting in Oslo last week, scientists from a consortium of Norwegian marine and aquaculture institutions announced that they have generated the first ever draft sequence and assembly of the Atlantic cod genome. They say their work will help to identify genes and genetic variations that underlie important traits for cod aquaculture.

In the same week, the head of Bangladesh's Fisheries Research Institute has warned that unplanned fish breeding may cause genetic erosion in aquaculture. He explained that unplanned inbreeding could cause a genetic deterioration that could damage aquaculture production and open water fisheries resources in the future.

And finally, further evidence has emerged of the health-improving characteristics of fish: eating fish can affect the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, an increasingly prevalent human disease with a genetic link. According to researchers at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, eating white and oily fish regularly provides some protection against the condition, while shellfish may have the opposite effect.

* This Week's Feature Articles

We have 4 new features this week:

Formulated Feed for Tiger Grouper Grow-Out
R. Usman, N.N. Palingg and K. Williams describe their research into optimising feed formulation for tiger grouper in an article for Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA). They found a dry pelleted feed to be cost-effective compared to feeding trash fish, and it had less environmental impact.
Biofuels, Biosecurity and Seafood Safety
Danette Olsen of Cawthron Institute in New Zealand explains how research there is improving our knowledge of how algae impact food safety issues in shellfish, and how they can be put to good use for biofuel production. Her article is published in New Zealand Aquaculture.
Cultured Aquaculture Species - Siberian Sturgeon
Information on the culture of the Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) from the FAO Cultured Aquatic Species Information Programme.
Nile Perch Market Report - August 2009
Helga Josupeit describes the situation for Nile perch as 'disastrous' in this FAO Globefish Report.
* Company News

Merck, Schering-Plough Merger Approved
GLOBAL - Merck and Schering-Plough have received approvals from the US Federal Trade Commission, Swiss Competition Commission and Canadian Competition Bureau for their proposed merger but significant divestitures are required.
Proceedings Available from Streptococcus Symposium
THE NETHERLANDS - Proceedings from a recent symposium that offered integrated health solutions for managing rising streptococcus infections in warmwater fish are now available from the event's sponsor, Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health (ISPAH).
