Editorial: Research Lies Ahead For 2010

The Irish Minister of Fisheries, Tony Killeen, has said that 2010 will start a decade of discovery for Irish marine science following a visit to the national research vessel in Galway.

However, earlier in the week there were reports that swarms of jellyfish are destroying Irish coastal farm stocks and increasing trawlers work loads, an issue that an EU project 'ECOJEL' is investigating.

In Canada at Mount Allison University, Crabtree Aqualab is under construction, a new facility, which will allow researchers to study the effects of temperatures, pollution and contamination on marine life.

After a glimmer of hope last week that the salmon industry in Chile was starting to recover, a new case of the Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA) has been confirmed in Aysén.

The Global FISH Alliance has been launched, a global aquaculture and fisheries body which aims to promote sustainable practices through the application of a system-wide approach that balances economic, environmental, governmental and social components essential to enhacing livelihoods and biodiversity.

In a new development, Indonesia is looking at maggots as an alternative to fishmeal, a change that the Ministry believe could cut feed costs by half.
