Editorial: TACS 2010: Decision Finally Reached
An agreement has finally been reached between the EU and Norway with regard to fishing quotas for 2010.
The outcomes include a five per cent decrease in Total Allowable Catches for mackerel, a 16 per cent increase in cod and a 15 per cent decrease in haddock and whiting.
The new agreement will cover a 10 year period and will be reviewed after five years. It is hoped it will give a degree of certainty to the industry.
Unrest with the Maryland Watermen's Association has resulted in the creation of the Chesapeake Bay Commercial Fishermen's Association.
The new watermen's lobbying group is concerned about Governor Martin O'Malley's plan to expand oyster sanctuaries. Environmentalists and scientists have cheered the plan, but watermen believe it will endanger their livelihoods.
An innovative research project in Australia is investigating the feasibility of aquaculture as a tool in treating sewage. Researchers from Deakin University are hoping to identify the benefits, constraints, species options and future research and commercial opportunities for integrated recycled water aquaculture.
The creation of global standards for pangasius and bivalve aqua have entered their final stages.
A final meeting to discuss the pangasius aquaculture dialogue will be held in March, whilst the last public comment period for the global sustainability standards for bivalve aqua began this week.
