Editorial: Reform For Aquaculture And Marine Industries

Over 223 submissions have been received regarding the report of the Aquaculture Technical Advisory Group in New Zealand. These submissions must now be seriously considered as the next stages of the aquaculture reform take place.

Key issues raised included the government's role in marine farming, the aquaculture levy and resource consent renewals as well as other matters.

A Marine Bill which heralds a new era for Scotland's seas was passed earlier in the week. It has been welcomed by all involved in the industry.

The bill will protect the marine environment, encourage economic investment and growth and help the industry face challenges such as climate change.

Elsewhere in Scotland, an official report confirmed that 18,879 trout escaped from a farm in Tayside last month.

SalmonChile President, Cesar Barros has said that Chile is ready to fight Norway for the US salmon market. He is confident that the salmon industry is recovering since the ISA outbreak, but insists there is still much to be done before production and confidence reache 2007 levels.

An audit of the British Columbian Fish Health Programme has confirmed that it is effective in monitoring, reporting and governing fish diseases with a particular focus on sea lice.
