Editorial: Cooperation Is Key To Sustainability

The Cook Islands, New Zealand, Niue, Samoa, Tokelau and Tonga have all recently agreed to further action, strengthening the TeVakaMoana Arrangement, which was signed earlier this year.

The TeVakaMoana Arrangement formalised the existing cooperation and laid a foundation for improved collaboration in fisheries. At a meeting last month in New Zealand, participants committed to deterring illegal unreported unregulated fishing.

In Viet Nam, a tuna association known as Vinatuna has been established in a bid to promote exports of the fish, Viet Nam’s third-largest seafood export item.

Vinatuna will also help members apply modern technologies to increase the quality and output of tuna, and reduce production costs so that they can compete against regional and global rivals.

In the nine months ending September this year, Viet Nam exported 58,000 tons of tuna, generating a turnover of around US$208 million, a 73 per cent year-on-year increase.

Global Standards for shrimp are close to being finalised, as the last public comment period for the draft standards opened last week. Feedback can be provided until 1 February 2011.

It is expected that the standards will be finalised by mid-2011.
