Editorial: Aquaculture Companies Perform Well

After announcing significant improvements in revenue in the second quarter of 2011, Cermaq has announced that Tore Valderhaug has been appointed as Acting CEO of the company, until a new CEO is in place.

The strong financial results are partially down to an increased share of value added products in EWOS and excellent performance in Mainstream Canada - two subsidiary companies.

Cooke Aquaculture has purchased Culmarex, the largest seabass and seabream farming operation in Spain.

Geoff Smart, Managing Director of Culmarex said: "Like Cooke aquaculture, Culmarex ‘refuses to go with the flow’ and has been a major innovator of bass and bream farming in Spain, both in terms of our products and our production methods. We look forward to developing our future with Cooke Aquaculture with optimism, enthusiasm and excitement.”

Despite decreasing prices, due to a significant increase in supply, Marine Harvest managed to improve average prices in the second quarter of 2011.

DuPont and AquaChile have announced a Sustainable Aquaculture Partnership that will join together the collective innovation and aquaculture expertise of the companies to sustainably raise fish. This will be achieved through a new feeding strategy, that reduces the need for wild-caught feeder fish.

The mackerel debate is still underway in Europe. The EU and Norway are still negotiating mackerel quotas with the Faroe Islands and Iceland, which are accused of plundering mackerel stocks.
